There is no evidence that corticosteroids result in an increased incidence of congenital abnormalities, such as cleft palate / lip in man. However, when administered for prolonged periods or repeatedly during pregnancy, corticosteroids may increase the risk of intrauterine growth retardation. The risk of hypokalaemia also increases if high doses of corticosteroids are given with high doses of bambuterol, fenoterol, formoterol, ritodrine, salbutamol, salmeterol and terbutaline. The toxicity of cardiac glycosides is increased if hypokalaemia occurs with corticosteroids.

Side effects usually improve with a lower dose and/or stopping steroids. Corticosteroids can weaken your immune system and make you more vulnerable to infection. This means you should avoid any live vaccine until at least 3 months after your course of corticosteroids has finished.

Before being given steroids for a brain tumour
There are two main groups of natural steroids – anabolic steroids and corticosteroids. If you are at an increased risk of osteoporosis, your doctors might suggest a dual energy X-ray absorptiometry (DEXA) scan to keep a check on your bone density. You might also be prescribed medicines to help protect you from developing osteoporosis. Do not stop taking corticosteroids suddenly if you have been taking them for more than three weeks.
If you need to take both medications, you may be given a medication called a proton pump inhibitor (PPI). Corticosteroids can sometimes interact with a type of medication known as protease inhibitors (like ritonavir). Corticosteroids can decrease the effectiveness of medications used to treat diabetes. They shouldn’t be used if you have an ongoing widespread infection.

Concomitant use of aspirin and Non-Steroidal Anti-Inflammatory Drugs (NSAIDs) with corticosteroids increases the risk of gastro-intestinal bleeding and ulceration. The efficacy of coumarin anticoagulants and warfarin may be enhanced by concurrent corticosteroid therapy and close monitoring of the INR or prothrombin time is required to avoid spontaneous bleeding.
